    One season down - two more to go. That's where we're at in the NJ HS sports world now as the fall is officially over and the winter has arrived. Jay Cook is joined by James Mooney in this episode as we go through the gamut. The book is closed on the football season after Camden completed the South Jersey sweep, winning the Group 2 championship - James has the headlines from that final (02:20). This week's Blast From The Past spotlights former Cedar Creek star and current Green Bay Packer Bo Melton, who scored his first touchdown of the season Sunday against the Chicago Bears (09:35). High school hockey is already well underway so we take a preview some of the top teams and players statewide, including the presumptive preseason No. 1 team, Delbarton, as well as our reigning Player of the Year, Braydon Sisco (11:47). The boys' basketball season here in the Garden State is going to look a lot different as some top talent has left New Jersey. We dive into the top teams and players to watch all winter long (27:25). The same can be said for girls' basketball around New Jersey - there will be a new No. 1 team to open the year and plenty of great teams are vying for that spot (48:00). We close out this week's show with an update on our Zoneman Trophy balloting and a preview of what's to come with our All-Zone football postseason honors (59:27).

  • Beyond The Score Podcast | Episode 14 | NJ Football State Finals Recaps!

    We're officially at the very end of the 2025 high school football season - so let's break down six of the seven state finals! Black Friday at MetLife Stadium was highlighted by the two Non-Public state championships and the guys have full breakdowns from St. Joe's and DePaul Catholic securing state titles (03:34). James Mooney joins the show live to discuss the Groups 5, 4, 3 and 1 state championship games that all had the same theme - South Jersey dominance. Washingtown Township, Winslow, Cedar Creek and Glassboro all won group titles and the guys go through each title game (27:42). This week's Blast from the Past profiles former Don Bosco Prep QB Nick Minicucci, who broke Joe Flacco's single season yards per game record at the University of Delaware (49:52). Then, Rich and Jay announce the finalists for the 2025 Zoneman Trophy, which is JSZ's annual statewide Player of the Year award. We highlight previous winners and discuss why we chose the seven finalists for this year's honor (51:57). Finally, we close out the show with a behind-the-scenes look at how we choose our All-Zone football team (01:16:19).

  • Beyond The Score Podcast | Episode 13 | Previewing NJ Football State Finals!

    Its...TIME! The last stage of the New Jersey high school football season has arrived and it's time to break it all down. Rich Chrampanis, Jay Cook and James Mooney go game by game previewing all seven state finals. They hit on the Group 5 state final (02:05), the Group 4 state final (08:43) and the Group 3 state final (20:13) in the first segment. The second preview segment focuses on the small school championships, highlighted by Group 2 (30:30) and Group 1 (38:57). Then, Rich and Jay settle in to dissect the two Non-Public state championships clashes - Non-Public B (50:43) and Non-Public A (01:00:55). This week's Blast From The Past spotlights former Toms River North star QB Micah Ford, who's playing well right now at Stanford (01:16:34). The NJ high school soccer season has officially come to a close and the guys put the final bow on it after eight state championships over this past weekend (01:18:13). We close out this week's episode with a look into the RWJ Barnabas Health 'Field of Dreams' and how high school athletes are going the extra mile to help their special-needs classmates play football (01:24:20).

    Championship season has officially arrived in New Jersey and it's time to break it all down! Rich and Jay spotlight football sectional finals, including the latest installment of the Ramapo-Northern Highlands saga as well as Jack Cannon's historical day for Holmdel (02:20). JSZ's James Mooney joins the show in studio to talk through some of the best football teams in South Jersey heading into the state semifinal round while the guys hit on some of the other North Jersey games we're covering this weekend (15:44). The Non-Public A semifinal round is finally upon us and it features the top-four teams in New Jersey - Rich and Jay break down those two games on Friday night (32:11). This week's Blast From The Past features Alabama wide receiver Lotzier Brooks, who is making an impact just a year after winning our annual Zoneman Trophy (44:31). JSZ's Tyler Mroz joins the show in studio to reflect on memorable seasons for national No. 1 soccer power Rutgers Prep and fellow national Top-10 program Paul VI, each of which won state championships on Sunday (46:03). Glassboro's football team is going for a third-straight section title and 25th straight win this weekend, so we welcome their head coach Timmy Breaker onto the show for a great interview (30:58). We stay in South Jersey for this week's Blast from the Past as we highlight former Mainland star Ja'briel Mace (42:21). New Jersey continues to stack up the big time wrestling commits and we talk the CBA trio who has recently all committed to powerhouse Iowa (43:59). We close out the show by talking through the tough decisions in this week's JSZ Top 10 Plays of the Week (50:59).

Playoff seeds for non-public football teams in New Jersey were decided over the weekend and the guys have instant reaction from both the Non-Public A and Non-Public B brackets (02:37). We're now into the sectional semifinal round for public football playoffs and we look ahead to some of the top games this weekend (24:07). The Paul VI girls' soccer team is fresh off their first South Jersey Coaches Cup title and star player Emma McCarthy joins the show to talk about the Eagles and her blended soccer and lacrosse careers (36:04). We put a bow on conference/county soccer season by going through the Essex and Union championships (47:16). This week's Blast From The Past is about Kentucky's Otega Oweh, who was named the SEC men's basketball Preseason Player of the Year (57:42). We wrap up the show with an alumni spotlight on Kyle Monangai and Davis Schneider (59:20).

    Beyond The Score's first special episode is a MASSIVE guest - legendary NBA reporter Adrian "Woj" Wojnarowski. After retiring from a remarkable career in media, Woj has transitioned to a new role as the General Manager of the St. Bonaventure University Men's Basketball program. Woj and co-host Rich Chrampanis attended St. Bonaventure together in the early 90's before each going onto award-winning media careers.

    Rich Chrampanis and Jay Cook talk to Wojnarowski about his new role at his alma mater, the ongoing impact that the Hurley family has on New Jersey basketball and the new realities of college basketball in the 21st century with NIL and recruiting completely changing the game.

    It's time to digest one of the most exciting weekends of NJ HS football in quite some time! JSZ's Jay Cook was on hand for the thrilling St. Joe's-Bergen Catholic overtime game over the weekend and goes behind the scenes to take us through how the Green Knights got it done (01:59). In this week's Blast from the Past, we go back to 2019 to highlight the last time St. Joe's won this rivalry game (17:29). That SJR-Bergen Catholic game had us thinking...what are the best games we've ever covered? So we open that Pandora's Box and go into the vault to relive some of those incredible clashes (19:08). The public school playoff brackets are finally out and the guys go through the most interesting brackets throughout the state (41:48). The first round of county/conference soccer championships are done - so we break down which teams emerged as champions (55:37). We have a sneak peek into our first special guest - Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Adrian "Woj" Wojnarowski, which airs in its entirety on Friday (01:01:32).
