This week, Pastor Don continues our journey through Hebrews 11 by examining one of the most challenging and powerful stories in all of Scripture—the testing of Abraham's faith when God commanded him to sacrifice his son Isaac. Hebrews 11:17-19 reveals that Abraham, by faith, offered Isaac as a sacrifice, reasoning that God could raise the dead.This is probably the greatest test of faith given to any man, followed by the greatest display of trust and obedience (next to Jesus, of course). Abraham faced the impossible: God commanded him to sacrifice the son of promise, the covenantal son, the son he and Sarah had waited decades for. And Abraham obeyed. His example teaches us what it truly means to put God first.In This Episode, Pastor Don Explores:1) The Ultimate Test (Genesis 22:1-2)"Sometime later" God tested Abraham. Scholars believe this was 20-25 years after Isaac's birth. Abraham had likely thought the trials were over. Life was good. Then God dropped a bombshell: "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and sacrifice him."This shows Abraham knew the voice of God. If ever there was a command that could be mistaken for Satan's voice, this was it. Yet Abraham didn't argue. He didn't demand an explanation. He simply obeyed.God tests us not to trip us up, but to strengthen us. The testing of our faith develops perseverance and proves its genuineness (1 Peter 1:6-9, James 1:2-4). Like silver and gold refined in fire, our faith is purified and strengthened through trials.2) The Ultimate Response (Genesis 22:3)"Early the next morning" Abraham got up and made preparations. He didn't hesitate. He didn't struggle. He did what God commanded.Abraham could obey so willingly because of what he had seen God do previously. He saw God lead him to a great land. He saw God provide the son of promise. His past experiences with God enabled him to exercise his faith to the fullest. The more we know God and His love, the less apprehensive we'll be to trust Him. The more we see God at work, the easier it will be to step out in faith.3) The Ultimate Faith (Hebrews 11:17-19)Abraham told his servants, "We will worship and then we will come back to you." He told Isaac, "God himself will provide the lamb." Abraham was confident that he and Isaac would return together.Hebrews 11:19 reveals the depth of Abraham's faith: "Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead." Since Isaac's birth was a miracle, Abraham believed God could perform another miracle. He had no precedent for resurrection—no one had ever been raised from the dead. Yet Abraham believed.This is faith that obeys when it doesn't make sense. Faith that believes in the God of miracles. Faith that trusts God's promises even when circumstances seem to contradict them.4) The Ultimate Devotion (Genesis 22:9-12)Abraham built the altar, arranged the wood, bound his son Isaac, and raised the knife. Isaac, likely around 25 years old, could have overpowered his 125-year-old father. He was submissive and obedient—even unto death. What loyalty! What faith!Then the angel of the LORD called out: "Do not lay a hand on the boy. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."Abraham's test was a test of devotion and loyalty. Was God first in his life? Abraham proved that God came before everything—even his beloved son. Corrie Ten Boom wisely said, "We must hold everything loosely, because when I grip it tightly, it hurts when the Father pries my fingers loose and takes it from me."Jesus said, "Anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me" (Matthew 10:37-38). If Jesus doesn't have first place in our lives, then someone or something has taken His rightful place.5) The Ultimate Provision (Genesis 22:13-14)Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in a thicket. He sacrificed it instead of Isaac. He called that place "The LORD Will Provide"—Jehovah-Jireh. God provided a substitute, just as He would one day provide His own Son as the ultimate substitute for our sins.Abraham didn't need an explanation because he already had the promise. He passed the ultimate test and showed he was fully devoted to God. And as a result, God reiterated His promise that Abraham's descendants would be as numerous as the stars and the sand.A Powerful ConnectionThis story points forward to Jesus:Abraham offered his only son; God offered His only SonIsaac carried the wood; Jesus carried His crossIsaac submitted to his father; Jesus submitted to His FatherGod provided a ram; He provided the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the worldThe Legacy of FaithThink of what might have happened if Abraham had failed this test.
