Getting into college and being ready to live at college are two different things. In this episode of The Girls’ Field Guide, we talk about the everyday skills girls need once more of life becomes their responsibility—from healthcare and communication to roommates, money, routines, stress, boundaries, and asking for help. The goal is not for a girl to have adulthood mastered before move-in day. It is for her to have enough practice to know, “I can figure out my next step, and I know where to turn when I need support.”🌿 In This EpisodeWe talk about:Managing doctor appointments, prescriptions, deadlines, and everyday responsibilitiesSpeaking directly with professors, coaches, supervisors, and other adultsHandling roommate issues and everyday conflictLiving with people whose backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, and values may be very different from hersHolding onto her own values while still being curious and respectfulSetting boundaries around privacy, roommates, social situations, and relationshipsBuilding emotional resilience when college feels lonely, awkward, or disappointingCreating systems for laundry, appointments, money, medication, sleep, and schoolworkKnowing when to solve a problem herself—and when to ask for help💬 Conversations to Have Before CollegeYou do not need to sit down with a giant readiness checklist.Instead, use everyday moments to ask questions like:If you got sick at college, what would you do first?Could you make your own doctor or dentist appointment? What would you do if you had a problem with a professor? How would you handle a roommate who kept bringing people over late? What if your roommate had very different beliefs or values from yours? What boundaries would matter most to you when sharing a room? What would you do if you were lonely or having a really hard week?Who would you go to on campus if you needed help? What things do you still rely on someone else to remind you about?🧺 Try This Before She LeavesChoose one thing you are still managing for your daughter and start handing it over.Maybe she:Makes her own medical or dental appointmentRefills a prescriptionEmails a teacher herselfKeeps track of an important deadlineStarts doing her own laundryCreates a simple weekly budgetUses a calendar or reminders to manage appointmentsHandles a small problem before asking you to step inSupport her while she learns—but let her do the actual task. The goal is not, “You’re on your own now.”The goal is practice while she still has backup.🎓 College Readiness Is More Than AcademicsA girl can be completely prepared for college-level coursework and still have very little experience managing everyday life on her own.Real readiness also includes being able to:Make the call. Ask the question. Have the uncomfortable conversation. Set the boundary. Manage the schedule. Recover from a hard day. Meet people who are different from her. And ask for help when she needs it.That is college readiness. And that is life readiness.🌱 Remarkable Girls Society ResourcesGirls Life + Leadership AcademyPractical life skills, leadership, communication, confidence, and real-world readiness.👉 https://remarkablegirlssociety.myflodesk.com/info-life-leadershipLife Skills IntensiveFocused support around the everyday skills girls need for greater independence.👉 https://remarkablegirlssociety.myflodesk.com/life-skills-intensiveExecutive Function & Life Success IntensiveSupport for planning, organization, time management, follow-through, and independence.👉 https://remarkablegirlssociety.myflodesk.com/executive-functionCollege + Career Discovery IntensiveHelps high school girls understand their strengths, explore majors and careers, and create a practical plan for what comes next.👉 https://remarkablegirlssociety.myflodesk.com/info-college-career-discovery🎁 Free ResourcesFor Parentshttps://remarkablegirlssociety.myflodesk.com/parent-freebiesFor Coaches + Professionalshttps://remarkablegirlssociety.myflodesk.com/coach-freebies🌿 About the Remarkable Girls SocietyThe Remarkable Girls Society helps girls build the skills they need for college, work, and life—and equips the adults who guide them.Through life-skills, leadership, college, career, executive-function, and personal-development programs, girls have opportunities to learn, practice, explore, connect, and grow while developing greater confidence, judgment, independence, and real-world readiness.Ready for college.
