We all remember the most awesome things from our childhood as we grew up over the years. But are all those cool things still as great as you remember? Or does it all just seem that way due to the rose-colored lenses of nostalgia? This Podcast aims to answer that very question across a range of topics. Are you a disco kid? Did you grow up during the greatest decade for music and hairbands? Are your favorite memories all from the final years of the 20th century? Then you're in good company as Jeffrey, Andy, Michael, and Mike (Yes, we have two of them) answer the question: Is it Cool or Just Nostalgia?

  • 036 - 12 Monkeys Hits Completely Different After 2020
    2026/08/27

Is 12 Monkeys (1995) still one of the smartest sci-fi movies ever made, or does it only feel that way because we all lived through the plot?

Terry Gilliam had $29 million, a script by David and Janet Peoples built on Chris Marker's 1962 short film La Jetee, and Universal watching every dollar. What he handed back was a 129 minute studio thriller that behaves like a panic attack. Bruce Willis spends most of it soaked, shackled, and insisting he is not crazy. Nobody believes him. Neither do you, and that is the trick.

🐒 Then there is Jeffrey Goines. Brad Pitt spent weeks inside the psychiatric ward at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia before cameras rolled, came back with a performance that never once sits still, and turned a supporting part into an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe win. Half of you think it is the bravest swing of his career. The other half thinks he is doing a bit for two hours straight.

The bigger problem is what 2020 did to this movie. In 1995 a manmade virus wiping out 99 percent of humanity was a wild premise you watched from a safe distance. That distance is gone. So the question is whether 12 Monkeys is a great film or a lucky one, and whether the airport ending still hits when the whole movie tells you what happens in its first sixty seconds. Jeffrey, Michael, Andy, and Mike fight about it, then vote.

  • 035 - Sunshine Is a Masterpiece for 80 Minutes. Then What?
    2026/08/13

☀️ Is Sunshine (2007) still one of the best sci-fi movies of the century, or does it collapse the second Danny Boyle stops making a space drama?

For roughly eighty minutes, Sunshine is close to perfect. Eight astronauts ride a stellar bomb the size of Manhattan into a dying sun, and Boyle sells every second of it. He made the cast live together for weeks, marched them through a nuclear submarine, and hired particle physicist Brian Cox to teach them solar science. Cox is the reason that bomb is Manhattan-sized instead of Moon-sized. Then the third act arrives, a burned survivor from the first mission starts stalking the corridors in strobing flashes, and a gorgeous existential thriller turns into a slasher. Half the internet calls that a fatal wound. The other half calls it the best part.

Here is the number that stings: a $40 million budget, $34.8 million worldwide, and a US opening on ten screens in July 2007. Nobody showed up. Then John Murphy's "Adagio in D Minor" crawled out and became one of the most borrowed cues in trailer history, so millions of people have felt this movie without ever watching it.

Now look at the call sheet. Cillian Murphy and Michelle Yeoh have Oscars now, and Hiroyuki Sanada has an Emmy. Chris Evans was still four years away from picking up the shield. So did we bury a great film, or do we grade a good one on a curve because everyone got famous later?

  • 034 - Predator: Action Classic or Macho 80s Time Capsule?
    2026/07/31

Does Predator (1987) remain the ultimate sci-fi action hunt, or are we camouflaging an aging macho movie with pure nostalgia?

John McTiernan's jungle classic sends Arnold Schwarzenegger and a squad stacked with Carl Weathers, Jesse Ventura, and Bill Duke into what looks like a routine rescue mission. Then the movie changes shape. The commandos become trophies, and Kevin Peter Hall's alien hunter turns 1980s muscle into survival horror.

Nearly 40 years later, Stan Winston's creature design, Alan Silvestri's score, the one-liners, and that gloriously excessive handshake remain action-movie landmarks. The franchise is still evolving after 2025's Predator: Badlands, but every new hunt gets measured against the original.

Jeffrey, Michael, Andy, and Mike (The Deuce) debate the practical effects, tension, machismo, pacing, and final showdown. Is Predator a perfectly engineered genre mash-up, or has time exposed a pile of muscles, mud, and memories? Stay for our Cool vs. Just Nostalgia vote, then give us yours in the comments.
