Is AI-generated music really music? Or does creating a song with artificial intelligence take something away from what makes music special?
In this episode of APN In Music, we're discussing one of the biggest debates facing the music industry today: AI-generated music and whether it deserves to be considered real music.
After being approached by an artist from the American Midwest who creates songs using AI software, I started thinking about what actually makes someone a musician or an artist. If somebody writes their own lyrics, melodies and songs but uses AI to generate the vocals and instrumentation, should their work be dismissed?
From the use of recording software and studio technology to artists who perform songs written by others, music has always evolved. Acts such as Soft Cell and the Fugees have also brought new life to previously recorded songs, raising questions about originality, interpretation and creativity.
So, where should we draw the line with AI?
AI music is here to stay, but should it be welcomed as another creative tool, or does it threaten the skills and livelihoods of musicians who write, perform and record their own music?
