Welcome to the Bay Area A-E-O podcast. This is our introductory episode: who we are, what answer engine optimization is, what we do, and where we do it.

Let's start with the name. A-E-O stands for answer engine optimization. You'll also hear it called G-E-O, which is generative engine optimization, or A-I-O, AI optimization, or AI S-E-O, or L-L-M S-E-O, after the large language models behind these assistants. The industry hasn't settled on one name yet. Whatever you call it, the goal is the same. When someone asks an AI assistant for a business like yours, your name should be in the answer, described accurately, with a reason to choose you.

Here's why that matters now. For about twenty years, getting found online meant ranking on page one of Google. Now a growing share of customers skip the list and ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot or Google's AI Overviews, and they get a short, confident answer. According to Pew Research, almost half of American adults have used an AI chatbot, about one in four use one every day, and sixty percent read the AI summaries at the top of their search results.

And the businesses in those answers aren't always the biggest or the best. They're the ones the AI understands. An assistant doesn't rank websites. It reads what's written about you across the web, decides who fits the question, and names a few businesses. If your information is thin, inconsistent or hard to read, you get skipped, even if you're the best option in town.

So what does the AI look at? We think about it as five signals. First, consistent listings, meaning your name, hours and address match on Google, Bing, Apple Maps and Yelp. Second, specific reviews, where customers describe what you do best in their own words. Third, an answer-ready website, with clear pages that answer the exact questions people ask. Fourth, structured data, the schema markup that tells AI your services, your service area and your hours. And fifth, trusted mentions in local press, guides and directories that name you.

Our work comes in four parts. We start with an AI visibility audit. We ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews the questions your customers actually ask, then show you who gets named, how you're described, and why. Next is entity and listing cleanup. We make your details consistent everywhere the AI looks. Then answer-ready content: service pages, F-A-Qs and structured data written in plain language, so the AI has something specific to quote. And finally citations and reviews. We work on mentions in the local sources AI trusts, plus a review process that gets customers describing what you do best.

A few questions come up in almost every first conversation. Do you need a new website? Usually not. We work with the site you have. How long does it take? Listing and data fixes can start showing up within a few weeks, because many assistants pull live information. Content, reviews and outside mentions build over two to four months. And how do you know it's working? We run the real questions your customers ask, something like "best family dentist in San Mateo," across every major platform each month, and show you how often you're mentioned, how you're described, and which competitors show up.

And we keep it honest: no vanity rankings, no fake reviews, no spam, and everything explained in plain English.

Now, who do we help? We work across four industries and forty niches. Food and drink, from restaurants and coffee shops to breweries, wineries and boba shops. Health and wellness, including dentists, chiropractors, med spas and therapists. Professional services, like law firms, C-P-As, financial advisors and real estate agents. And home services: plumbers, H-VAC, electricians, roofers, solar installers and more. Every one of those gets recommended differently, and each has its own episode in this series.
