The voices in my head urged me to pull a thread on a Marvin Gaye t-shirt. I followed it down a rabbit hole and learned about what we know as The Vietnam War, Marvin Gaye, his brother, his fighting spirit, and how the album “What’s Going On” almost fell into a hole of its own, possibly never to see the light of day. Did you know Berry Gordy hated the song and the whole concept of “a protest record?” Did you know September 21, 1970 is listed as the last recording date of the single “What’s Going On” (55th anniversary in 8 days), and September 16, 1971 “Inner City Blues” was released as a single (54th anniversary in 3 days)? I straddle the past and present, the battles behind us and the battles before us, and discuss why this album and that war are still relevant. Join me.
