From the The FIGO Committee on Health Systems Strengthening and Respectful Care, Dr Stella Dantas is joined by obstetrician Dr Jezid Miranda and midwife Professor Soo Downe to explore the importance and power of respectful, person-centred maternity care. Together, they discuss trauma-informed approaches, the challenge of misinformation, and why truly listening and responding to women's needs is essential to improving outcomes and experiences.
The conversation also highlights how multidisciplinary collaboration strengthens trust, supports shared decision-making, and improves outcomes for women, babies and families. The speakers share practical ways to build stronger working relationships between birth providers.
Finally, they examine the growing challenge of burnout among midwives and obstetricians and the need for investment in health systems to ensure that health professionals have the time and resources required to provide safe, respectful and compassionate maternity care.
