In February 2025, after brief deliberations, a Greenville County jury convicted Zachary Hughes of the October 2021 murder of Christina Parcell. Hughes was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case has now been remanded to the circuit court, where a judge will determine whether newly discovered evidence, following the victim's fiancé's recent guilty plea, warrants a new trial. Hughes' direct appeal has been placed on hold pending that decision. One of the issues raised on appeal is Hughes' claim that he was not permitted to present a complete defense at trial. Hughes has maintained that he killed Parcell to protect her minor daughter from what he believed was ongoing sexual abuse.     Journalist Mandy Matney, who has closely covered the Beach v. Parker’s “outrage” lawsuit, became part of the legal battle when attorneys for Parker’s Corporation subpoenaed her for a deposition.Matney did not appear at the location specified in the subpoena, citing safety concerns that she raised shortly before the deposition was scheduled to begin. According to court filings and testimony, Matney believed the designated location was unsafe. The parties were unable to agree on an alternative location, resulting in the deposition not taking place.Following her failure to appear, Parker’s attorneys filed a motion to compel her deposition and later sought to have her held in contempt of court. The court was asked to determine whether Matney’s reasons for not attending were legally justified and whether her actions warranted sanctions or other consequences.
