Animator Pablo Smith Turns 1 Nephi into a Book of Mormon Graphic Novel | Roundy’s Rants, Raves & Reviews

Host Tanya Roundy interviews animator and director Pablo Smith, who spent 20+ years in animation (including Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob and Disney’s Prep & Landing) before creating a Book of Mormon graphic novel to help his youngest daughter connect with scripture. Pablo explains his journey from choosing a mission over CalArts, studying animation, and learning visual storytelling through storyboarding, then applying those skills to write and illustrate a 193-page Volume 1 covering 1 Nephi chapters 1–4. He discusses balancing humor with reverence, avoiding unnecessary graphic violence, and portraying characters like Laman and Lemuel with nuance. Pablo shares how the project has strengthened family gospel discussions, including a meaningful moment after depicting Lehi’s dream. Viewers can buy Volume 1 through Cedar Fort Publishing and watch volumes on YouTube or visit bookofmormongraphicnovel.org.
