After a two-week break, PSA: The Mental Health Podcast is back with a conversation for anyone who has ever looked at their career, accomplishments, responsibilities, or job title and quietly wondered: Who am I without all of this?
In this newest episode of Season 10, Izzy Baker sits down with Dr. Brian E. Arnold, an educator, entrepreneur, and business owner whose work focuses on helping people discover their gifts, purpose, and potential, for a powerful conversation about identity, purpose, success, anxiety, faith, self-worth, and the dangerous habit of allowing what you do for a living to become who you are. Men are often taught to define themselves by being providers, husbands, fathers, leaders, entrepreneurs, or professionals—but what happens when the title disappears? Can you explain who you are without mentioning your job?
Dr. Arnold shares a story that makes that question even deeper. As a child, he was placed in special education, struggled to read, and was told he wasn't going to amount to much. After years of battling labels and educational barriers, he eventually became a teacher, earned a master's degree and doctorate, built businesses, and dedicated his life to helping other people discover who they were meant to become.
The conversation also gets real about money and entrepreneurship. Dr. Arnold opens up about raising eight children on a teacher's salary, working side hustles, leaving education for entrepreneurship, building financial success—and then watching the 2008 financial crisis wipe away houses, cars, and much of what he had built. That loss ultimately changed his definition of success from simply making money to building a life centered around identity, faith, health, service, and helping other people succeed.
Izzy and Dr. Arnold also unpack anxiety, overthinking, confidence, resilience, discipline, and the importance of keeping promises to yourself. Dr. Arnold explains why perseverance, self-worth, service, and resilience can make someone valuable regardless of what happens to their career—and why too many people spend their lives simply existing instead of discovering what they are actually great at.
The episode becomes especially personal when the conversation turns to job loss and mental health. Izzy reflects on losing his own identity as an educator after more than six years in education and raises the possibility that sometimes losing a title isn't simply a setback—it can force you to discover who you were underneath the title all along. For men whose identity is heavily connected to providing, income, status, and career success, losing a job can feel like losing part of themselves.
This conversation also serves as a natural continuation of the quarter-life crisis and reinvention conversations Season 10 has been exploring. Sometimes what looks like starting over is actually discovering that you built your identity around something that was never supposed to define you permanently. Your profession can change. Your money can change. Your relationships can change. Your status can change. None of those things should have the power to erase your sense of self.
