  • What Is God Like? Exodus 32-34, The Golden Calf, and God's Self Description | Made Like His Brothers 003
    2026/10/16

When Moses asks to see God's glory, God answers by telling him who He is. If you asked God what He is like, what would He say? In Exodus 32–34, Moses experiences God relenting from disaster twice while still upholding consequences, offers God two options for forgiving Israel, and then hears God proclaim His own name. In this episode, we look at what that tells us about the basis of God's forgiveness, and ask how well each of last episode's two views fits it.

    In this episode:

    - Why we're starting with God's own description of Himself

    - The golden calf (Exodus 32): how Moses experiences mercy and punishment in the same event

    - Moses's two options, "just forgive them" or "blot me out," and why God declines both (Exodus 32:30-35, Romans 9:3)

    - Exodus 33: God relents a second time, and Moses asks to see His glory

    - Exodus 34:6-7, the "Thirteen Attributes of Mercy": hesed, emet, and what "by no means clear the guilty" means

    - Forgiveness and consequences: how Deuteronomy and Ezekiel 18 correct Israel's misunderstanding of God's justice and mercy

    - What God shows Moses, and what He doesn't: a character to trust rather than a mechanism

    Passages mentioned: Exodus 32:30-35; Exodus 33:1-23; Exodus 34:6-7; Deuteronomy 7:9-10; Deuteronomy 24:16; Ezekiel 18:19-24; Romans 9:3; Isaiah 55:6-9

  • How I Approach the Bible | Made Like His Brothers 001
    2026/10/08

I finished seminary, then spent the next two years afraid to read my Bible. In this first episode, I tell you what changed, and how I approach the Bible now: as one story centered on Jesus, who came to rescue us from sin, death, and the devil.

    In this episode:

    - Why seminary left me with questions I didn't know existed

    - The passage in Isaiah 59 that changed how I read Scripture

    - Why I read the Bible as one story, not a collection of separate ones

    - Three commitments for how we'll read Scripture on this show

    - Matthew 12: what it looks like when a contradiction means we've misunderstood something

    - Where the name "Made Like His Brothers" comes from (Hebrews 2:14-18)

    Passages mentioned: Isaiah 59:13, 16-17; Isaiah 61; John 5:39, 46; John 10:35; Matthew 12:22-29; Colossians 2:13-15; Hebrews 2:14-18; [final exhortation passage]
