In the autumn of 1997, Luna found herself in the town of Ellerton, Missouri, a place where the trees along Emmaus Road turned the color of old blood. She was there to catalog the hymns of the town's dying congregation, but the organist—a woman named Agnes—had other plans. Each evening, Agnes played a piece that wasn't in the hymnal, a melody that seemed to pull the shadows closer. Luna began to notice things: the way the dust motes stopped moving when Agnes played, the cold that seeped from the organ pipes, the faint smell of wet earth and something older. The final night, Agnes asked Luna to stay after the service. The organ played itself, and the music told a story—a story of a promise made to the land, a promise that had to be kept. Luna left Ellerton changed, the melody still humming in her bones, and she knows now that some hymns are not meant to be sung by human voices.
