The File That Erased a General's Ceiling
In this episode, we follow the career and choices of Wilhelm Keitel from cadet to the center of Nazi power. The episode traces the moments, decisions, and documents that shifted his path and asks how a capable, obedient officer became indispensable to a criminal regime.
Person: Wilhelm Keitel
Date: 22 September 1882 (birth); January 1938 (Blomberg file); 16 October 1946 (execution)
Location: Germany (Helmscherode, Berlin, Nuremberg)
Event: Keitel receives the Blomberg file and delivers it to Hermann Göring
- Keitel enlists as a cadet in 1901, is barred from cavalry for lack of noble birth, and accepts artillery without complaint.
- He rises through staff and organizational roles, noted for thoroughness and steady service rather than strategic brilliance.
- Colleagues label him a lackey-"Lakeitel," "a sergeant's brain in a field marshal's body," and "loyal as a dog"-remarks made openly within the military.
- In January 1938 a dossier on Werner von Blomberg, including police records and photographs, lands on Keitel’s desk and he chooses to take it to Hermann Göring.
- Göring uses the file to force Blomberg’s resignation and then consults Hitler about who should replace him, propelling Keitel further into the center of power.
