This sermon teaches that God never intended for one person to carry the burden of spiritual leadership and ministry alone. Through the story of Moses and the seventy elders, the sermon reveals how God shares His Spirit to strengthen His people and multiply their ability to serve.
Moses carried the heavy responsibility of judging the Israelites, guiding them, and addressing their endless needs. Although Jethro advised him to delegate responsibilities by establishing leaders over thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens, the sermon distinguishes practical organization from spiritual empowerment. In Numbers 11, God commands Moses to gather seventy elders and promises to take of the Spirit resting upon Moses and place it upon them. When the Spirit rests on the elders, they prophesy, demonstrating that the burden of leadership is no longer Moses’ alone.
Even Eldad and Medad, who remained in the camp rather than gathering at the tabernacle, receive the Spirit and prophesy. When Joshua asks Moses to stop them, Moses responds with a powerful desire: “Would God that all the LORD’S people were prophets, and that the LORD would put his spirit upon them!” His longing reveals that spiritual empowerment was never meant to be reserved for a select few.
The sermon connects this event to Jesus’ promise of the Comforter and the outpouring of the Holy Ghost at Pentecost. It presents the Spirit as God Himself dwelling within His people, extending His presence and power to all believers.
The message challenges Christians not to leave prayer, witnessing, holiness, and defending biblical truth to pastors or a few spiritual leaders. Every believer is called to participate and carry the gospel.
Ultimately, the Spirit is not a limited resource, and no believer must carry the burden alone. God equips His people collectively, turning one burdened leader into a Spirit-filled community—“seventy Moseses”—united in serving Him and moving toward the promised land.
