  • The ministry of listening is one of the most neglected yet essential spiritual disciplines in the church. James 1:19 commands every believer to be “swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” Listening is not passive silence but an eager, humble posture of the heart toward God and others. Proverbs 18:13 warns that answering before hearing leads to folly and shame, while Ecclesiastes 5:1 reminds us that true worship begins with a heart ready to hear.

Mary, sitting at Jesus’ feet, chose the one thing needful, unlike Martha, who was distracted by much serving (Luke 10:39–42). Before we can speak for Christ, we must first listen to Him. Samuel’s calling likewise began with listening. Though he did not initially recognize God’s voice, he learned to pray, “Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth” (1 Samuel 3:10). His ministry began not with preaching, but with a listening heart.

Job’s friends initially comforted him through seven days of silence and presence. Their mistake came when they began explaining before understanding, becoming miserable comforters. Sometimes the most Christlike response to suffering is simply to remain present and listen.

Jesus demonstrated this ministry when He stopped for blind Bartimaeus and asked what he wanted, giving dignity to his cry (Mark 10:49–51). The Bereans also exemplified noble listening by receiving the Word eagerly and examining it through Scripture (Acts 17:11).

A listening heart grows in wisdom, discernment, and spiritual maturity. A listening church allows the Spirit to correct, comfort, and guide its people. Therefore, believers must learn to sit at Jesus’ feet, hear the afflicted, comfort the grieving, and listen before speaking. The ministry of listening requires no title or platform, only a willing heart. Let us become people who hear God and one another, living out the prayer of Samuel: “Speak, Lord; for thy servant heareth.” Amen.
