概要
The alabastron poured a year's wages and cost him the road to death
In this episode, we follow the moment a sealed flask of spikenard is broken six days before Passover and poured over a rabbi's feet in a house near Jerusalem. The episode traces who Mary of Bethany was, the cost and origin of the perfume, and the charged context that made one gesture consequential; what question does that single act leave hanging?
Person: Mary of Bethany
Location: Bethany, eastern slope of the Mount of Olives
Date: six days before Passover
Item: alabastron of nard worth three hundred denarii
Event: anointing of Jesus' feet; wiped with her hair
- A sealed alabastron of spikenard, imported from northern India, sat in the household until Mary broke the stopper and poured it out.
- The perfume's value is identified as three hundred denarii-roughly a year's wages for a laborer-indicating deliberate long-term saving.
- Mary sits at the rabbi's feet in the posture of a disciple while her sister Martha handles hospitality, a socially unconventional scene.
- The timing-six days before Passover, after Lazarus's raising and amid rising priests' opposition-places the act in a politically tense moment.
- John introduces Mary by the very act she will perform, signaling the anointing as central to her identity before the gesture unfolds.
