Is the Great Falling Away already happening in the Christian church? Dr. Delman Coates, senior pastor of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church in Clinton, Maryland, has sparked controversy by preaching that there is “no biblical basis” for abstaining from premarital sex. He argues that the Greek word porneia, commonly translated as “fornication” or “sexual immorality,” refers primarily to prostitution rather than sex before marriage. Coates has also made controversial statements about divorce and remaining in unhappy marriages. In this video, Joshua Simone of Torn Curtain examines Dr. Delman Coates' shocking sermon clips, his progressive Christian theology, and the growing influence of liberal theology within the church. Are we witnessing biblical truth being compromised to accommodate modern culture? And what does the Bible actually teach about sex before marriage, marriage, divorce, and sexual purity? We take a deep dive into what the Bible says about premarital sex, fornication, and sexual immorality, examining the original Greek meaning of porneia and key Scriptures including 1 Corinthians 6:18, 1 Corinthians 7:2–9, Hebrews 13:4, Matthew 15:19, and Genesis 2. We also explore 2,000 years of historic Christian teaching on sexuality and marriage, along with biblical scholars such as Sam Storms and Tim Keller. This discussion goes beyond one megachurch pastor to address the dangers of progressive Christianity, false teaching, biblical compromise, and apostasy in the modern church. How can Christians stand firm on God's Word without falling into legalism or compromising biblical holiness? The church must return to sound doctrine, biblical truth, repentance, and righteous living rather than conforming to the culture around us.
