Domestic violence isn’t just a statistic, and it doesn't only happen somewhere else. It happens behind the closed doors of our own neighborhoods, right here in Irvine.

In Screwed, we pull back the curtain on the invisible realities of domestic abuse, examining how history, power dynamics, and societal stereotypes shape our understanding of the truth. Through the lens of real, local cases and from the tragic murder of Brandi Mares to the high-stakes SWAT standoff involving Sergio Garcia, we contrast the lived experiences of victims against the hardships of legal framework.

How does our justice system actually handle domestic violence? Does it protect the vulnerable, or does it merely react to the tragedy? Join us as we explore the importance of real justice, dissect the realities of the legal system, and confront the unsettling truth about our own community. Because when the system fails, we are all left vulnerable.

The group shares final words and thanks.

Brandi Mares never got the chance to tell her story herself. And in Sergio Garcia’s case, intervention only came once the situation had already escalated into crisis.

These cases are not isolated incidents. Across the country, domestic violence calls are treated every single day as temporary arguments instead of warning signs.

And when systems hesitate (when reports are ignored, protection is delayed, or abuse is minimized) the consequences can become irreversible

Domestic violence is more than a private issue. It’s a public safety issue. One that depends on how seriously people are willing to listen before violence turns deadly.

Because prevention doesn’t start after the headlines. It starts with recognizing patterns, responding early, and refusing to look away.

Thank you for listening to SCREWED.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, reaching out to a trusted adult, counselor, or support organization can help.

    Until next time, stay aware.
