  • Goodbyes, Grief and the Beauty of New Beginnings
    2026/10/29

What does it mean to say goodbye to a place, a community, or a version of your life that has become part of who you are? And how do we find the courage to step into something new when we're not quite ready to let go of what we're leaving behind?

In this first heartfelt episode of All Over the Map, Jess and Mindy explore the complicated emotions that come with life's transitions, from the excitement of new beginnings to the unexpected grief of closing a chapter. As Jess prepares to leave Alexandria and Mindy looks toward leaving Cincinnati, both find themselves navigating the bittersweet experience of untethering from the familiar while making room for whatever comes next.

Through reflections on birthdays, the loss of loved ones, meaningful friendships, and one final gathering of a beloved women's circle, they consider the ways our communities shape us and what happens when the people and places that have grounded us begin to change. They talk about the vulnerability of starting over, the importance of creating connections in unfamiliar places, and the realization that even the changes we choose can carry their own kind of grief.

At the heart of this conversation is a celebration of female friendship and the extraordinary women who show up for us through every season of life. The ones who witness our becoming, hold space for our uncertainty, and remind us that belonging isn't always tied to a particular place.

Because perhaps the hardest part of beginning again isn't figuring out where we're going, but learning how to carry everything we've loved into whatever comes next.

Whether you're navigating a move, grieving a loss, experiencing a major life transition, or simply feeling the quiet pull of change, this episode is a reminder that goodbyes and new beginnings can coexist, and that the relationships that matter most have a way of traveling with us.

    In this episode, we explore:

    • Why even welcome changes can bring unexpected grief.
    • The emotional experience of leaving behind a familiar community.
    • How female friendships help us navigate life's transitions.
    • The significance of rituals, celebrations, and intentional goodbyes.
    • Finding the courage to create belonging in a new place.
    • The beautiful truth that we can be grateful for what was while still being excited about what's ahead.

Join Jess and Mindy for an honest, tender, and occasionally funny conversation about letting go, starting over, and discovering that home is sometimes less about where we live and more about the people who remind us who we are.

  • So, We're Really Doing This? Leaving America and Starting Over: An Introduction to All Over the Map.
    2026/10/22

Welcome to the very first episode of All Over the Map!

What happens when two friends decide to pack up their lives, leave everything familiar behind, and start over in different countries? And what happens when they decide to document the whole messy, exciting, terrifying experience along the way?

In our inaugural episode, we're taking you back to April, when we sat down to record our very first conversation for this podcast. Jess had just sold her house in Virginia and was preparing to move her family to Sweden, while Mindy was making plans for a new chapter in Austria. Neither of us knew exactly what was waiting on the other side of these decisions, but we knew our lives were about to change in some pretty extraordinary ways.

Consider this episode our introduction, the who, what, where, when, and most importantly, the why behind All Over the Map.

We're getting candid about the decisions that brought us to this point, including our very personal reasons for leaving the United States, the fears that come with uprooting our families, and the complicated emotions of saying goodbye to a life we've spent years building. We talk about what we're most excited about, what keeps us awake at night, and the strange experience of feeling both completely certain about a decision and absolutely terrified to follow through with it.

Because as exciting as the idea of starting over in Europe might sound, the reality involves a whole lot more than beautiful scenery, international adventures, and romantic notions of a different life. There are relationships to leave behind, identities to reconsider, logistics to navigate, and plenty of moments when we wonder what on earth we've gotten ourselves into.

This is where our story begins, before the moves, before the new routines, and before we have any idea how things will actually turn out.

We're inviting you along for the journey, not because we have all the answers, but because we're curious about what happens when we give ourselves permission to imagine a different kind of life and then find the courage to actually pursue it.

Welcome to All Over the Map. We're so glad you're here.

  • All Over the Map: The Trailer
    2026/10/13

What happens when you leave behind everything familiar to build a life somewhere new? And what happens to your sense of identity, belonging, and purpose along the way?

Welcome to All Over the Map, a heart-centered podcast hosted by New York Times bestselling author Jess Buchanan and Ayurvedic counselor and coach Mindy Schlechter.

Together, from their new homes in Sweden and Austria, Jess and Mindy explore the deeply personal side of international relocation, motherhood, and midlife reinvention.

Through honest conversations with women who have uprooted their lives and started again, we explore what it means to raise children across cultures, navigate changing relationships, grieve the lives we've left behind, and discover who we're becoming in the process.

This isn't a podcast about moving logistics. It's about the emotional landscape of starting over, finding belonging, and discovering that sometimes, moving across the world brings us closer to ourselves.

Whether you're living abroad, dreaming of a new beginning, or simply wondering where you belong, there's a place for you here.

Because home isn't always a place. Sometimes, it's the person you become along the way.
