For episode 8 of De Facto I am joined by Robert Beshara who recently translated Mourad Wahba's 1995 book Fundamentalism and Secularization. Beshara discusses the work of Wahba, the task of translating his book from Arabic to English, the influence of Ibn Rushd on Wahbha, and how Wahba's book can help us to better understand and better critique the rise of the far right, religious nationalism, and various other fundamentalisms extant today. Beshara also discusses the importance of interpretation for Ibn Rushd and Wahba. Beshara also briefly discusses his new book, A Psychoanalytic Biography of Ye, and announces, for the first time publically, yet another book that he has on the horizon. I want to give my utmost and heartfelt thanks to Robert Beshara for generously donating his time to De Facto, and for his scholarship, his music, and for his warmth, generosity, and support more generally. Robert K. Beshara is the author of Decolonial Psychoanalysis: Towards Critical Islamophobia Studies (Routledge, 2019) and Freud and Said: Contrapuntal Psychoanalysis as Liberation Praxis (Palgrave, 2021). He is also the editor of A Critical Introduction to Psychology (Nova, 2019) and Critical Psychology Praxis: Psychosocial Non-Alignment to Modernity/Coloniality (Routledge, 2021). Further, he is the translator of Mourad Wahba's (1995) Fundamentalism and Secularization (Bloomsbury, 2022). Beshara is the founder of the Critical Psychology website: www.criticalpsychology.org.
