Perspective, Leadership & Gratitude – A Conversation with Mervyn Naidoo
In this episode of Off The Clock, I had the pleasure of speaking with Mervyn Naidoo, Group CEO of Actom, alongside my son Mahlatse, about his incredible career journey, leadership insights, and life lessons.
Mervyn’s story is a testament to the power of education, perseverance, and intentional leadership. His reflections on mental well-being, structured thinking, and cultural experiences offer valuable lessons for leaders at all levels.
Growing up in a blue-collar home in KwaZulu-Natal, Mervyn’s path took him from engineering at the University of Natal to a unique blend of psychology, economics, and leadership, shaping the way he understands and motivates people. Today, he leads a company with over 8,500 employees across five countries—but his success is deeply rooted in structured thinking, resilience, and a strong sense of balance.
One of the most powerful moments in our conversation was Mervyn’s reflection on travel and gratitude:
"We often look at what we don’t have—chasing the bigger house, the faster car. However, during a trip to a rural village in India, I met someone who changed my perspective. He told me that instead of always looking up at what we lack, we should look at those less fortunate than us and be grateful for what we do have. That moment stuck with me."
This episode is a must-watch for leaders, entrepreneurs, and anyone striving to balance ambition with gratitude.
