You have a story. Actually, you have a lot of them. The problem is, you probably don’t think they’re worth telling. I’m Sara Lohse, and Open This Book is the podcast adaptation of my award-winning book, Open This Book: The Art of Storytelling for Aspiring Thought Leaders. This isn’t a traditional audiobook. It’s an invitation to look differently at the moments that made you who you are—and learn how to turn them into stories that connect, build trust, and make your ideas worth remembering. I don’t believe everybody has a story. I believe everybody is a story. We’re anthologies filled with beginnings and endings, plot twists, supporting characters, conflicts, questionable decisions, and lessons we might not recognize until much later. And you don’t need a dramatic origin story, a life-changing tragedy, or a future biopic to have something worth saying. Some of our most powerful stories are the little ones: the embarrassing mistakes, unexpected detours, small wins, and seemingly ordinary moments that changed us in ways we didn’t recognize at the time. Throughout this podcast, I’ll share my own stories—sometimes more of them than my dignity would probably prefer—as we explore how to find your voice, uncover the value in your experiences, overcome imposter syndrome, build genuine connections, develop your personal brand, and establish yourself as a thought leader. There will be career failures, bad decisions, unexpected successes, lessons I learned the hard way, and, yes, an unfortunately shaped tattoo from a solo trip to Ireland. But ultimately, this isn’t really about my stories. It’s about helping you find yours. The original book includes writing prompts and exercises designed to help you dig into your own experiences and start putting your stories on paper. As you listen, you can follow along with the free accompanying journal, which includes all of the writing prompts from the book. Download it at openthisbookpodcast.com. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, creator, speaker, podcast host, professional, or simply someone who has ever thought, “I don’t have a story,” I’m here to prove that you do. Your story doesn’t have to be extraordinary to be valuable. You just have to learn how to tell it. So, go ahead and open this book. Oh good. You already did.Copyright 2026 Sara Lohse

  • Introduction: How to Harness Your Story and Build Thought Leadership in Your Field
    2026/10/12

Have you ever felt like there’s a story inside you—one that could transform the way you lead, work, or connect—but you’re not sure how to share it or even where to begin? This episode is your invitation to crack open your own narrative and discover the power within.

In this very first episode of the Open This Book Podcast, I introduce you to both myself and the mission behind the show and my book, Open This Book: The Art of Storytelling for Aspiring Thought Leaders. I take you behind the scenes of my own journey, sharing how I learned to feel comfortable telling my story—even the messy, complicated, less-than-perfect chapters. If you’ve ever struggled to find your voice, carried shame or trauma from your past, or felt unsure whether your story “matters,” you’re not alone. In fact, I believe we’re all ongoing anthologies—filled with beginnings, middles, endings, unexpected plot twists, and plenty of supporting (and unsupportive) characters.

Here’s what I cover in this episode:

    • Why our stories matter: How sharing honest, authentic stories can establish you as a thought leader, build your personal brand, and inspire deeper connections—especially in professional spaces.
    • Embracing vulnerability: I talk candidly about my own hesitations, the years it took me to harness my narrative, and how each “baby step” along the way helped me develop the confidence to share my experiences.
    • Who this podcast and book are for: Whether you’re an entrepreneur looking to humanize your brand, a professional wanting to stand out, a creative spirit, or just someone who’s felt a story brewing under the surface, this is for you.
    • Practical tips and tools: This book is intentionally designed as a personal workbook, with prompts and writing exercises to help you dig into your history and craft stories that have shaped you. For podcast listeners, I’ve created a downloadable journal so you can follow along, reflect, and write your own story as we progress together.

Ready to get started? Download the printable journal at openthisbookpodcast.com so you can work through the prompts with me. Let’s uncover your unique story, use it to fuel your growth, and build the kind of authority that can only come from an authentic voice. This is your story—I can’t wait to help you tell it.

  • Chapter 1: The Common Misconception
    2026/10/12

We’ve been taught to believe that, unless our lives are bursting with drama or headline-worthy events, our stories aren’t worth telling. But what if the truth is the exact opposite? In this opening episode, I challenge the common misconception that only extraordinary lives make for meaningful stories—and show why everyone, including you, has a narrative that matters.

    What I Discussed

I open with a reminder: Yes, you have a story, and yes, your story matters. Drawing on my experiences speaking across podcasts and stages nationwide, I confront the belief so many of us hold—that our stories aren’t valuable enough to be shared.

I unpack how we live in a world overflowing with sensational news, viral content, and larger-than-life personal brands, which can make our own experiences feel small in comparison. But the truth is, you don’t have to be Malala, Anne Frank, or Dr. King for your journey to matter. I highlight the real power in the “smaller,” everyday stories—the ones that create genuine connection through shared experience rather than spectacle.

We explore why those little moments of perseverance, small victories, and honest reflection can be even more impactful for the people hearing them—because they let us see ourselves in someone else’s shoes. And I set the stage for what’s to come on this podcast: practical guidance and real stories, starting with my own, to help you discover, shape, and share your authentic narrative.

    Key Takeaways
    • Your story doesn’t have to be shocking, tragic, or dramatic to be impactful—it only needs to be honest and true to who you are.
    • The most powerful connections come from shared experiences, not sensational ones.
    • Relatable, everyday stories are just as valuable as headline-making ones—they help others see themselves reflected in your words.
    • You are the only person who can tell your story, and that perspective has inherent value.
    • Thoughtful, authentic storytelling is a skill you can develop—and it can help you achieve personal and professional goals.

You might be tempted to think your story isn’t worth telling. I’m asking you to challenge that—right now. Take a quiet moment today and write down a simple story from your life, even if it feels “ordinary.” Visit openthisbookpodcast.com to download your free printable journal, complete the first prompt, and if you’re willing, share your entry with me. I can’t wait to see how your story unfolds.

Let’s flip the script on what it means to have a story that matters—one chapter at a time.
