"I don't have time." "I can't afford it." If you're a coach, you've heard these from clients and prospects, and you've probably said them yourself.

In this Hunch for Lunch episode, Jill Young and Jess Stavem dig into resistance. As enrollment for Coaching Magic YOU-niversity 2027 picks up, they keep hearing the same two sentences from coaches who love the program but can't say yes. They look at the resistance on three levels: in themselves, in coaches, and in the clients coaches serve.

Jill explains why these two phrases feel so final. They lean on resources we've agreed are limited, like twenty-four hours in a day or a set balance in the bank. An unskilled coach takes them at face value and stops inviting. Jess names the hard part of enrollment: honoring someone's boundary while still gently pushing through the resistance. Together they explore how "Say more about that" opens a door that "Tell me more" can sometimes close. They also look at the ego, not as arrogance but as the part of us that protects us from pain and keeps us safe in our own comfort prison.

From there, Jill brings in Steve Chandler's reframe. When someone says they don't have time or can't afford it, the first place to look is that they don't want to. That rarely means they don't want to be a better coach. Usually it means they don't want to do the inner work, sit with their resistance, or go back to a beginner's mind. Jill also shares practical tools coaches can offer clients: setting real priorities, building time discipline, and finding the "leaky pail" where time and money quietly slip away. She tells the story of saving for a high-fee coach she really wanted to work with, a goal she reached in four months without giving anything up. She also shares the story of a coach who noticed her own "I can't afford it" talk, said yes to her own growth, and signed three new clients in three days.

The conversation then widens to two big questions. Why isn't everyone getting coached? And why do so many talented coaches struggle to build thriving practices? Jill's answer is that it's scary, and it takes courage. She describes coaching as a kind of calling that pulls people in before they know what they're signing up for, and she argues that the business side gets much easier with a mentor who is just one step ahead of you. Jess adds a reminder from Jill's latest blog: readiness is a byproduct of the work, not a prerequisite. Jill closes with a moving story about being seen and called forth by a fellow coach, and an invitation to move through the resistance together.
