What draws us to stories of soldiers and first responders isn't the action — it's the courage. The willingness to face something genuinely frightening and keep doing the job. And every one of those people, at their best, is an echo of the original: the one who looked at what freedom for humanity would cost and said it is finished — because he paid it in full.

Paul opens Galatians 5 with a declaration and a command: it is for freedom that Christ has set you free — stand firm. Don't let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Maintaining freedom requires something. It requires the same thing every courageous person in history has needed: the willingness to face fear and act anyway.

Freedom isn't a passive state you arrive at. It's something you hold onto actively, against real opposition.

What that looks like for most people isn't a battlefield — it's the moment you refuse to complicate a simple faith. A SEAL team in Afghanistan let a goat-herding kid go rather than violate their core value of protecting the innocent, even knowing it would cost them. It did. That's what it looks like to stick with the truth when everything in you wants to make an exception. And in Karachi, a businessman commissioned a 150-foot cross in the middle of a city where being Christian is genuinely dangerous, simply because he believed it. The question worth sitting with is: where does your faith require that kind of courage — and are you finding it?
