On November 16, 1776, Fort Washington fell and nearly 3,000 American soldiers were killed, wounded, or captured. Almost 1,800 miles away, the Continental Navy brig Andrew Doria entered the harbor at St. Eustatius and fired a thirteen-gun salute. Eleven guns from the Dutch fortress answered. Dave Bowman tells the story of the First Salute, the Golden Rock of St. Eustatius, and the commercial network that supplied the American Revolution with weapons, gunpowder, naval stores, and credit. It was not formal Dutch recognition of American independence, but it was the first official acknowledgment of an American flag aboard an American national vessel by a foreign authority. Fort Washington revealed how close the Revolution was to destruction. Fort Oranje revealed how far the American claim to nationhood had already traveled.
