A college sophomore at Columbia wrote an essay in the New York Times about a years-long "something" with a young man named Jeremy. They'd known each other since 14 but never defined what they were. No labels, no obligation, no exclusivity — perfect freedom, by cultural standards. She concludes by writing: without labels, I have no justification for my feelings and he has no obligation to acknowledge them. It can never end because officially it never began. I'm stuck.
That essay became a cultural moment because it put language to something a whole generation is experiencing. Maximum autonomy — and completely paralyzed. What looks like freedom turns out to be suspended animation. You can't move forward and you can't get closure. That isn't liberation. It's a different kind of bondage.
Paul addresses this in Galatians 4 using Roman law. An heir — even a full heir who will one day own the whole estate — is no different from a servant while underage, subject to guardians until the time set by the father. But when that time came — when Jesus came — adoption happened. And Paul's staggering claim is that everyone who comes to Jesus, male or female, receives the full inheritance of a legal heir. What's been "done" is complete. And now what's "being done" is the raising — the growing up into the fullness of who you've already been declared to be.
