At about five in the morning on the ninth of April, 1975, a man named Seo Do-won was taken out of a cell in a Seoul prison and hanged. Eighteen hours earlier, the Supreme Court of South Korea had finished confirming his death sentence. The reading had taken roughly ten minutes. Over the next few hours, seven more men followed him, at intervals of about half an hour each. Thirty-two years later a Korean court reopened the same file and found that all eight were innocent — that the organisation they had been hanged for belonging to had never actually existed. This is the case that jurists around the world came to call judicial murder.
