- 2,500 short tons of ammonium nitrate were loaded into SS Grandcamp in 100-pound paper sacks beginning April 14.
- The Grandcamp was a 437-foot Liberty ship with an inoperable engine, docked April 11.
- The Port of Houston had banned loading this material in 1946; Texas City had no such ban.
- At 8:37 a.m. April 16, twenty-eight volunteer firefighters arrived and waited for an order that never came to use water.
- By 9:12 a.m. a two-ton anchor was airborne and landed in a ten-foot crater 1.6 miles from the dock.
