The Notebook, the Checks, and the Woman Who Survived Sixteen Days

A desperate act of triage was written in a soaking notebook that washed ashore two hundred and thirty miles from the wreck - and those four small checkmarks would decide who lived. What happened on the Maren Dusk between impact, a burning ship, and a half-buried spiral that turned up in a Georgia marsh sixteen days later?

In this episode, we tell what the surviving notebook contained, who wrote it, and how its seven names explain why one crew member lived while others did not. How did a damaged lifeboat, freezing water, and a single list determine survival?

Person: James Ferris
Date: November 1, 2011
Location: Atlantic (impact on port quarter) / Harker's Flat marsh, Georgia (notebook found)
Event: Collision and fire aboard the Maren Dusk
Status: One survivor from the ship

- The Maren Dusk was struck at approximately 2:40 AM on November 1, 2011, and was on fire four minutes later.
- The vessel was a 162-foot product tanker registered in Wilmington, Delaware, carrying industrial solvent and had departed Brunswick, Georgia on October 23, 2011.
- James Ferris, age 31 and the ship’s second officer, wrote seven names under the heading "CAN SWIM" and marked four with checkmarks while bleeding and hypothermic.
- Six people launched in the starboard survival capsule in sixteen-foot seas; the capsule held six survivors: Karen Wells, James Ferris, Paula Nance, Rico Sands, Leonard Pryce, and Eddie Thorn.
- A well-service contractor, Melvin Sullivan, found the rusted, coverless notebook in cordgrass at Harker's Flat marsh on November 14, 2011, about 230 miles from where the ship sank.
