He asked me what it was going to cost before I had the lid off the unit, and when I said I didn't know yet, he asked again, slower, like I hadn't heard him.
Late July, the kind of week where the sun is already working at seven in the morning. Brick ranch north of Kingfisher, well kept, the grass edged along the driveway. He was in his early sixties, retired from a job where he had run numbers for a living, and he had the air conditioner's paperwork on the kitchen table in a folder before I walked in.
The system had quit the night before. Outdoor unit humming, no fan, house climbing through the low eighties. That is a fifteen-minute diagnosis most days, and the fix is usually one of three parts. I have done that call a thousand times.
But the trouble had started before I got there. Shelby had given him the arrival window that morning, three hours, and he had called back twice. Not angry. He wanted it narrowed. He wanted to know if it was going to be the front of the window or the back. He wanted to know what would make it late.
When I pulled in he met me at the truck and the first thing he said was, "Just tell me what this is going to run me."
I said what I always say, that I'd know a lot more in about twenty minutes. He said he understood that, and then asked me for a range. I gave him a wide one, because a wide one was honest. He wanted it narrower. I told him I couldn't narrow it until I opened the unit. He said, "Ballpark, then. You've done this a long time."
That is where a lot of technicians get short with people. I used to. Because from where I stand, he is asking me to guess, and a guess I say out loud becomes a promise I didn't mean to make. And from where he stands, I am refusing to answer a simple question.
Core line: "When he asks for a ballpark, I say, "I'd rather show you the actual number in twenty minutes than give you a number now that I have to walk back." Then I go to work."
