The best time to decide how you'll fight in your marriage is before you're fighting. That's not unromantic — it's wise. A personal code of honor in marriage builds the guardrails before the dangerous curves arrive: how you'll argue, what words you'll never say, how you'll make up, what you'll do when an emotional connection elsewhere starts to feel easier than working on the one you have. You don't build a guardrail at the point of crisis. You build it in the safe zone, when everything is good, so it's already there when you need it.
There are words that create scars. You can apologize and be forgiven, but if you keep cutting the same scar over and over, eventually the nerves go dead. A code of honor says: I can throw rotten tomatoes. But I will never say those words. Not because they're illegal — because I've decided what kind of person I want to be in this marriage, and that's not it.
In finances, the same principle applies. Your money will end up controlling you unless you decide beforehand what kind of relationship you want with it. The goal isn't to hoard or to have nothing — it's to own your stuff so your stuff never owns you. A code of honor that grows in generosity every year isn't about impressing God. It's about becoming the kind of person your family knows puts them ahead of things. And unlike legalism — which tallies your failures — a code of honor gives you a second chance every single day.

Discussion Questions
1. Do you and your spouse (or the person you're closest to) have an understanding of how you'll handle conflict — what you will and won't say or do? What would it look like to build that?
2. What words or patterns in conflict do the most damage in your relationships? What would it mean to put those off limits ahead of time?
3. What does your financial life reveal about what you actually value? Is there a gap between what you say you believe and where your money goes?
