A sense of contained dread: an armchair built in 1883 survived three separate town hall fires and was repeatedly found upright and intact outside with no plausible way it could have been moved through the building’s tiny hatch. How did a 41-inch high black walnut chair reappear after each blaze, and who quietly protected it?
In this episode, we follow the documented trail of the chair from its commission to the strange circumstances surrounding three different fires and the people connected to it, asking whether the pattern of survival points to deliberate concealment or something else entirely.
Person: Ernest Orren
Date: August 1883
Location: Harwick Town Hall annex crawlspace
Event: Fires in 1894, 1916, and between 1920-1937 span
Person: Charles Aubrey
- The chair was built in the summer of 1883 and cost nine dollars and forty cents according to Harwick council minutes.
- The access hatch Olson used measured sixteen inches by twenty-two inches while the space above the chair was nineteen inches and the chair stood forty-one inches tall.
- Norman Olson found the upright, intact armchair in the crawlspace on July 11, 2009 after spending about twenty minutes searching for an explanation.
- The chair was found undamaged in the yard after a July 1894 fire attributed to a gas lamp; survey maps stored in the clerk’s office were destroyed.
- During a July 1916 fire, the chair was found sitting on Crane Street about two blocks from the building and seen by milkman Harold Voss between approximately 3:35 AM and 4:15 AM.
