Last week, Morgan told her me something I hadn't let herself fully sit with.

In the little 4 X 4 podcast cubicle, I take a moment to look my daughter in the eye and tell the words she's owed her for a long time: I'm sorry. Not a general apology — a specific one, for something that cost Morgan real time and real closeness with her dad. 🤍

What comes back isn't what you'd expect. Morgan talks about the difference between a hurt that's twenty years old and one that's still fresh — "that cake is baked," she says — and how she's already grieved it, already made her peace, without pretending it didn't cost her anything.

Then there's the story behind a piece of hand-stitched fabric a much younger Morgan made for her mom — misspelled and all — that's been a family joke for twenty years. Except it was never really a joke. It's part of why the two of them can have a conversation like this one at all.
