- Garfield missed his 51st birthday by two months and weighed 210 pounds at the time of the shooting.
- Within one hour of the shooting, eleven doctors had inserted their unsterilized fingers into Garfield's back.
- Seventy-nine days after the shooting Garfield's body weighed 130 pounds and was riddled with abscesses and pus throughout his torso.
- The attending physician Dr. Willard Bliss assumed charge that morning; the autopsy found both lungs collapsed into pneumonia.
