Flash Airlines Flight 604 crashed into the Red Sea shortly after departing from Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, in 2004, killing all 148 people on board. The Boeing 737 suddenly entered a steep and uncontrolled descent, leaving the crew with only seconds to respond.
The investigation was complicated by the extreme depth of the wreckage, but investigators examined several possible explanations. Egyptian authorities considered potential mechanical problems involving the aircraft’s flight controls, while American and French investigators focused more heavily on pilot disorientation and the captain’s loss of situational awareness during the nighttime departure.
The airline also faced serious safety concerns, including weaknesses in crew resource management and a poor safety reputation that had already led to restrictions in several countries. The accident highlighted the dangers of inadequate training, weak cockpit communication, and insufficient oversight of low-cost carriers.
Although the flight recorders were recovered and extensively analyzed, disagreements over the exact cause left important questions surrounding the crash unresolved. The disaster nevertheless contributed to stronger international scrutiny of airline safety standards and helped drive the development of European aviation blacklists designed to restrict unsafe carriers from operating in European airspace.
