- Eric Quinn, a 31-year-old Harlan County electrician, stopped his unvarying Tuesday routine the week he vanished.
- He messaged coworker Doug Vestal on January 7 saying he was “Heading over to Earl's shanty. Back in an hour,” and was not heard from again.
- A birdwatcher and photographer, Nicole Schultz, noticed and photographed a wet boot print on the interior windowsill of the ice shanty.
- The shanty’s exterior was padlocked from the outside, the interior window latch was missing and the screw holes were cleanly empty.
- Medical examiners placed Eric in the shanty for about ten days with blunt force trauma and no signs the body had been moved.
