Federal immigration agents pepper-sprayed a volunteer in the lobby of Santa Barbara County’s jail — and another volunteer in a pink shirt was also hit — sparking outrage as advocates warn this violent escalation is part of a troubling pattern. The incident, captured on video, occurred in a public area with no sheriff’s deputies present, and while the Sheriff’s Office filed a courtesy report, they won’t investigate due to federal jurisdiction. This isn’t an isolated case — at least eight people have been pepper-sprayed by federal agents in the Santa Barbara region this year, raising alarms about unchecked force against bystanders.
