What if the traits you are most proud of are also the ones protecting you from the feelings you do not want to feel? In this episode of The Sacred Momentum, Aubrey gets deeply honest about a recent self-reflection exercise that uncovered some uncomfortable blind spots—especially around intensity, competence, overthinking, and the need to understand everything before feeling safe. One of the biggest realizations? Aubrey does not usually respond to vulnerability by falling apart. She becomes more capable. She researches. She asks questions. She makes a plan. She looks for the missing piece. She tries to understand the entire situation. And while that can look productive and self-aware, sometimes it is really a nervous system strategy designed to avoid helplessness, disappointment, uncertainty, or fear. This episode explores the difference between true self-awareness and simply becoming very good at explaining your own coping mechanisms. Aubrey also shares the blind spot that surprised her most: realizing that she may come across as far more intense than she feels internally. What feels like curiosity, passion, engagement, or wanting to understand may sometimes land as pressure, urgency, or interrogation to the people around us. The deeper question becomes: Are we aware of our intentions—or are we willing to look at our impact too? Aubrey also shares a real-world moment that happened almost immediately after this insight. Instead of defaulting to research, problem-solving, or trying to understand disappointing news, she allowed herself to simply feel sad. She played sad music. She cried in the shower. She let the disappointment exist. And only after the feeling had been given space did she intentionally shift into gratitude and perspective. Not as avoidance. Not as toxic positivity. But as a conscious next step after the sadness had been felt. In this episode, Aubrey talks about: • Why blind spots are often hidden inside our greatest strengths • The difference between being capable and using competence to avoid vulnerability • How overthinking can become a nervous system regulation strategy • Why some people respond to fear by becoming productive instead of emotional • How self-awareness can become another form of control • The difference between understanding a feeling and actually feeling it • Why urgency is often a clue that we are seeking safety rather than information • How intention and impact can be completely different • What it looks like when curiosity becomes intensity • Why gratitude can become emotional bypassing when we use it too quickly • How to recognize when a strength has turned into armor • Why healing is not about removing our personality—but creating more choice inside our patterns REFLECTION PROMPTS You do not need to answer all of these at once. Notice which one makes you slightly uncomfortable. That is probably the one worth sitting with. What quality do I get praised for that might also function as protection? What do I immediately do when I feel powerless, uncertain, rejected, disappointed, or afraid? What do I repeatedly try to understand instead of simply feel? What feedback about myself do I resist because it does not match the way I see myself? How do I think I come across when I am stressed—and how might other people actually experience me? What do I become more of when I am dysregulated? More controlling? More helpful? More withdrawn? More productive? More critical? More intense? More funny? More independent? What do I ask for indirectly that I could ask for directly? What feeling am I trying to avoid when I start researching, fixing, planning, caretaking, scrolling, working, joking, or over-explaining? Am I looking for clarity—or am I looking for immediate relief from uncertainty? Where do I confuse understanding my emotions with processing them? What would happen if I stopped trying to solve the feeling and allowed it to exist for a few minutes? What if this thing I keep trying to fix is not asking to be fixed? What if it is asking to be felt? The goal is not to get rid of the traits that have helped you survive, succeed, lead, parent, build, or create. The goal is to recognize when those strengths stop being tools and start becoming armor. Healing is not becoming less capable. It is becoming capable enough to know when you no longer need to protect yourself from your own feelings. If this episode resonates, share it with someone who is incredibly self-aware, wildly capable, and maybe just a tiny bit exhausted from trying to understand everything.
