What it was like for me to actually see Santa arriving in his sleigh full of presents on Christmas Eve.0I Saw SantaIssue No. 020Welcome to Issue No. 020 of Short Stories by J Mel, entitled I Saw Santa. What I am about to tell you is true. You will not believe it. But it is true. I remember it vividly. You may be tempted to say it can’t be true because I was too young to remember it. While it is true I can’t tell you for sure when it happened, I still remember it. Besides, this is my story, damn it, and I say it is true. You don’t have to believe it. But I do!But I can still see it vividly in my mind all these years later. This may be one of the first memories I have, except for the black widow spider my big brother showed me in the barn when we lived at the farm at Valley View just outside of Paducah. I think that was the first place we lived after I was born. And I have pictures of me in diapers at our second house in Paducah when I looked like I was maybe one and one-half years old. I was a handsome dude with a dirty diaper. And that was before we moved into the house furnished to schoolteachers at Patton Springs School at Afton. And that was before we moved onto my grandpa’s farm/ranch known as the old Chambers Ranch in about 1953. I would have been about 4 years old then. So, I’m pretty sure it was before that.I remember that I wanted some pajamas for Christmas with spaceships on them that were like overalls except they had the feet built in and they buttoned up in front. It was dark outside, and I was anxious for Santa Claus to come. We had a window next to the front door that had lots of small windows panes, and I could stand on my tiptoes and look outside where it was dark and see the stars in the sky. Our house was the first house across from the school with the football field in between. Other houses for teachers and school workers were in a row down our street that connected to the paved road that took you to downtown Afton where there was a general store, cotton gin, post office, fuel supply place, blacksmith shop, and some other houses. Of course, I probably did not know all of that at the time.Anyway, I remember we had a Christmas tree and a few presents under it. Now, I don’t remember if my little sister was around or not. She is two years younger than me. She could have been. I just don’t remember. I am pretty sure my older brother was there because I remember that he wanted a baseball glove, and he tried to get me to ask Santa for a baseball. I didn’t want a baseball. I wanted a toy truck and pajamas and some chocolate candy and a whole long list of other stuff that I do not remember. I just remember I had a lot riding on this particular Christmas. Also, the week before that we went to school with mother and saw Santa. I remember it concerned me because he looked tired, and his beard was stained with what looked like tobacco. And he had bad breath. Daddy said he might not be the real Santa because Santa had lots of helpers. I remember daddy saying something about it being a real dry year and most of the farmers had not made a cotton crop and needed money to buy presents for their children. He said they might have been paid money to be Santa’s helpers. I didn’t understand what that was about. I still trusted that he would tell the real Santa what I wanted for Christmas.I was a little concerned about the “being good thing.” I didn’t think I had been “bad.” But there were times when I got into trouble, cried too much, or didn’t do what I was told to do. But overall, I hoped I would qualify for the list of things I had submitted.I was getting tired, and mamma had started turning the lights out and called us to bed. I walked to the front door and looked out the window one last time in hopes of seeing Santa flying in on his sleigh. My eyes were getting heavy, and I yawned and left a cloud on the windowpane with my breath and then I heard the faint sound of bells in the distance. I stood on my tiptoes and put my nose against the windowpane and strained to see in all directions. Suddenly, in the distance I saw a flash of light and a bright red and gold streak appear in the sky. It circled high above me several times and then cascaded downward in a spiraling fashion until I could see a beautiful reindeer with a shiny red nose leading eight other reindeer pulling a bright red sleigh trimmed in gold loaded with a huge brown bag that hung over its sides. Driving the sleigh was a jolly fat man with a soft white beard and a red pointed cap trimmed in white puffs with a wand in one had that sparkled as he waved it in the air and the reins in the other. He swooped low enough that I could see the big smile on his face and feel the warmth of his voice as he shouted, “Ho Ho Ho” and flew back into the night’s darkness and out of sight. At that exact moment, mother picked me up like a feather and put me on her hip as I tried to explain that I had just seen Santa Claus and ...
