Isaac Mercer was eight years old, sick with a fever, and sleeping in a rental house beside an abandoned greenhouse when something knocked three times beneath his bed. His mother had taught him that signal in case he needed her during the night. But when he woke, someone shaped like her was already standing in his doorway.
Isaac followed the voice into the hall before hearing his real mother coughing behind her closed bedroom door. By morning, he had been found injured, freezing, and trapped inside a greenhouse locked from the outside. The back door of the house was still chained. One of his slippers was under the kitchen telephone stand, exactly where he remembered leaving it.
For most of his life, Isaac tried to accept the explanation his parents gave him: fever, sleepwalking, and a frightened child’s confused memory. Then his daughter woke him with a message from someone she called Grandma.
