Their gaze is as the highway of this perfect day

Into the silent shadow, as it steals away

Between the dusky shoals and shadows of the day,

Ever across the trail of the storm goes away,

Softly across the wide horizon of the day!

Come unto the sunset, with your great infinite!

Away with the glorious stars from your smile!

May rejoice in our light at the eventide,

And rise with a smile to the listening air.

Thus I demand a kindly prayer across the world

To lift my little son from this immensity;

Make me no words for the ultimate ultimate,

Leaving the symbol of the conduct of my soul!

Make me not with the lakes of victory complete,

Wherein my spirit would beat a fiery trust,

Turned as a feather with a charm of destiny,

Making the heart of the woman with its motion.

See that lovely procession, the reaching of boat,

Without a weary longing to pause at the bay;

Sure as the ultimate of a dominant woe

Winged by the dusky speed of destiny, the art

Of a new creation, which the inmost dreamings

Makes a young memory of a life mystery!

Sure as the thrilling of the tones of sympathy

Makes a strange smile of memory and despair!
