Let me tell you about the most expensive mistake I almost made, because I think a lot of you are about to make the exact same one. A few years back I had an idea for a membership and I was so sure about it. I could see the whole thing in my head, the spaces, the calls, the perfect little world. So I did what most of us do. I disappeared. I put my head down for months, built the community, recorded the trainings, designed the graphics, made this whole beautiful complete thing in a room by myself, talking to nobody. And then I opened the doors. Want to guess how many people I'd talked to about whether they actually wanted this before I built it? Zero. I built the whole restaurant before I checked whether anyone in town was hungry.
This one's for you if you've got a membership idea you've been quietly building in the dark, convinced that once it's done people will show up. Good news. You do not have to build the thing to find out if people want the thing, and building it is actually the worst possible way to find out. There's a smarter order of operations, and it will save you months of your life.
In this episode:
- Why a clear picture in your head is not demand, and the gap where dreams quietly die
- What you're actually testing (hint: it's actions, not compliments) and why "that sounds amazing" is worthless
- Validation method one: real conversations, the questions that work, and who never to ask
- Validation method two: one small paid workshop, and the after-signal that means "build it"
- Validation method three: the pre-sell, why it isn't scammy, and how to decide your go/no-go number in advance
- What to do when only a few people buy (a small yes is still a yes)
- The sneaky reason we call it "building" when we're really hiding, and how to stop
