I pulled up to a river in northern Idaho last fall that I'd never fished before — off a gravel road I found on a paper map, most of a day's drive to get there. And when I finally walked down to the bank, I didn't make a cast for almost an hour. I just stood there and looked at it. To anybody watching it would have looked like I'd forgotten why I came: a man in waders, rod in hand, doing nothing. I wasn't doing nothing. I was reading it. This is what I was actually looking at during that hour — current, structure, temperature, light — and why it took me six years and a few hundred days of being wrong to see any of it. There's an older guy on a Montana river who gave me the whole thing in one sentence I wasn't ready to hear. And there's the high mountain creek where I ignored my own advice, spooked every pool by throwing my shadow across it, and caught nothing for two hours before I made myself sit down. The skill turns out not to be about fish at all. Most of the information is on the surface, if you're willing to stand still long enough to take it in before you act.
