Do you dream of becoming a Wolf on Wall Street? Is having a library dedicated to you on your bucket list? Are you prepping all your kids to become President because you never could? In America today, we generally consider ambition to be a laudable pursuit. And we want to have children to perpetuate our namesake. We want the fame, and we like little mes. But ambition is a sneaky sin, a glittering vice, which we cannot mistake for determination or pertinacity. And children are not parent swag.
In this thirteenth episode of season four, on common grace in culture, Chris and Kyle discuss the British spy TV series, Slow Horses, and two recurring themes in the show: ambition and family legacy. Ambition is canvassing for attention and accolades through achievements. “Look at me! Notice me! Am I worthy? I'm worthy. Please tell me I'm worthy!” That's something you say to the Lord, not your boss. And family legacy treats kids like purses to wear at fancy events. Stop striving for the sky, you’re not an angel. And parent your kids, don’t parade them.
We can neighbor work and "we" better. Let's go and do likewise.

Two Pour Spirits is a podcast of Project : Neighbor. Project : Neighbor is a theological think tank and spiritual training ground for the Church and the common good. We think theologically about everything from soil to sky, and disciple believers from crib to casket. We draw widely from the catholic Christian tradition, are ecumenically-oriented, and practically-minded.
Project : Neighbor is co-directed by Rev. Dr. Kyle David Bennett and Dr. Christopher Cimorelli.
