How a Somerset Kid Became F1 Champion Against 100-1 Odds
In this episode, we follow the journey from a market town in Somerset to the highest ranks of Cadet One, tracing the decisions, setbacks, and small moments that propelled a young driver forward. What sacrifices and choices defined the path he took?
Person: Jenson Button
Location: Frome, Somerset
Date: 19 January 1980 (birth)
Event: First competitive kart race May 1988; Christmas Eve 1999 phone call from Frank Williams
Team: Williams (debut season 2000), Benetton (signed 2001)
- A Zip go-kart bought by his father at age seven started daily practice in fields and rain, not a track.
- He won every race in the 1991 British Cadet Kart Championship: thirty-four wins out of thirty-four.
- Coaching by Dave Spencer pushed aggression and attacking instincts until Spencer quit after his son’s fatal kart accident.
- At eighteen he won the Autosport BRDC Award and tested a McLaren MP4/14; at nineteen he was invited by Frank Williams to a Jerez shoot-out.
- He earned an FIA Super Licence after a 300-kilometer test over two days and became the youngest British driver to score a World Championship point.
