You can learn a lot of tarot keywords and still feel stuck the moment a real question hits. We wanted to get underneath that frustration and talk about what actually makes divination work: listening, timing, symbolism, and the courage to respond. Our guest JoAnna Ferrar (Llewellyn author, priestess, divination teacher, and professional violinist) brings a rare blend of musical training and spiritual practice that makes the “language” of signs feel practical instead of mystical and vague.
We dig into why silence matters as much as sound and how pauses create the space where intuition can speak. JoAnna walks us through her nature-led approach from The Diviner Path, including the idea that divination is a cycle you live inside: realizing you have a question, shaping it, choosing a method (tarot, pendulum, runes, omens), interpreting, taking action, and returning to reflect. We also talk about the modern “party trick” version of divination and why it can feel scary when you skip the action step and forget you’re a participant in the conversation.
From there we head outdoors for augury, omen walks, and the art of rebuilding observation in the natural world, then into dream divination without rigid dream dictionaries. Joanna shares how symbols blend cultural meaning with deeply personal associations and why “spirit logic is sideways logic.” We also explore her devotion to Apollo and the link between technique and inspiration, plus a playful M&M divination practice that proves spirit can speak through almost anything when you learn how to listen.
If this conversation helps you rethink how you ask questions and read signs, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave us a review so more listeners can find the show.
JoAnna Ferrar is a Llewellyn author, priestess, divination teacher, oracular practitioner, professional violinist, and host of the Coffee & Divination podcast.
JoAnna's background as a professional musician and graduate of the Juilliard School has made her uniquely attuned to the world of symbols and their nuanced interpretations—a skill she brings to her work in divination. She is a coven leader and teacher.
Her book, The Diviner’s Path, offers a nature-led approach to divination with tarot, runes, pendulums, and omens. JoAnna’s work explores land-based divination, animism, seer work, and practical ways of connecting with our intuition and the spirits around us.
JoAnna is the host of the Coffee and Divination podcast, which she launched in 2020 to feature interviews with prominent authors and practitioners of occult, pagan, and divinatory arts. Visit her at CoffeeAndDivination.com.
