Your social media feed can feel like a mirror of the world, but it’s really a mirror of what grabs you. Once you notice that, everything changes. We unpack what’s happening behind the scenes on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, and why your feed is never random. Every pause, like, comment, share, and replay teaches the social media algorithm what to serve next, and it’s not optimizing for truth, health, or balance. It’s optimizing for engagement.
We dig into why rage spreads faster than calm discussion, and how negativity bias collides with algorithmic recommendation systems to push the loudest, most emotional content to the top. From there, we talk about doomscrolling, why we keep consuming bad news even when it makes us feel worse, and how constant exposure can contribute to secondary traumatic stress. If you’ve ever put your phone down feeling anxious and drained, we explain the psychology that keeps the loop going.
Then we zoom out to echo chambers and misinformation. When your feed keeps rewarding the same beliefs, opposing views fade, and your personalized reality starts to feel objective. We explain why misinformation can feel more convincing than good science, especially in health and nutrition, where study quality gets flattened into “breaking news.” Finally, we share a simple question that helps us regain media literacy: instead of “Do I agree with this?” ask “Why do I want this to be true?”
If you want a healthier relationship with technology, start here, then share this with a friend who’s stuck in the scroll. Subscribe, leave a review, and tell us what kind of content you want to “water” in your feed next.
