A single advertising line helped rescue an entire industry, and it points to a hard truth about the UK’s electric car transition: you cannot sell a product to people who do not yet want the idea. We start in Britain in 1948, when rationing and a government-issued demobilisation suit inadvertently crushed men’s hat sales. The Hatters Development Council’s response was not another discount or a technical tweak, but a category-changing campaign: “If you want to get ahead, get a hat.” It sold meaning first, then demand followed.

From there, we move into upstream thinking, using Dan Heath’s “go up the river” parable and a sharp Expedia case study. Instead of shaving seconds off customer service scripts, Expedia asked why calls were happening at all and removed the root cause. That mindset is exactly what I think is missing from too much EV policy and industry lobbying. Calls for VAT cuts on electric cars, lower VAT on public charging, bigger grants and reduced grid fees can be downstream answers that fail to address what actually holds drivers back.

We also tackle the psychology: range anxiety, fear of using public chargers, and the habit of dismissing real concerns as “myths”. I compare EV risk narratives with airline safety briefings, and I argue for psychopractical solutions like making charging visible from main routes with simple signage. Finally, we look at why creativity matters, why emotional triggers drive purchasing more than most people admit, and why a dedicated EV oversight body could help build trust, standards and momentum.
