You did everything right. Built the career, ticked the boxes, showed up every day. And somewhere along the way, you woke up wondering — is this really it?

House of Voltage is the podcast for Quiet Rebels in their 30s, 40s and beyond, who are privately done with lives that feel flat, small, or borrowed from someone else's blueprint. This is where we talk about reclaiming your aliveness — through honest conversations, big ideas, and the radical belief that ordinary is optional.

No motivational fluff. No toxic positivity. No marketing gurus telling you who to be. Just permission to want more, think differently, and design a life that actually fits — on your own terms.

Hosted by Zoe, Aliveness and Identity Coach, and formerly known as The Mischief Movement Podcast.

Welcome to House of Voltage. You were always meant to find it.

You can do everything “right” and still feel quietly off. That strange gap between a life that looks fine and a body that feels flat is what we’re getting honest about today, using a metaphor that makes the pattern easier to see without shame: dimmers, flickers, and the circuit breaker that trips the moment you start to come alive.

I refer to the dimmer effect (Ep.103) as the slow, cumulative way we turn ourselves down over months or years, often without noticing. Then we move to flickers (Ep.104), those small surges of energy that break through anyway: a creative idea, a new desire, a moment of clarity that refuses to fade. The twist is what happens next. Just as the “current” starts to rise, a wave of practicality arrives out of nowhere: not now, not at your age, not without a proper plan. Sometimes it’s sudden tiredness. Sometimes it’s email. Sometimes it’s just full on procrastination.

I frame that shutdown as a circuit breaker, not a personal flaw. Breakers aren’t broken; they’re protecting a system built for a smaller life than the one you’re starting to want. We end with a simple weekly practice to catch the sensible reason in the act and write it down like a symptom, so you stop mistaking the trip for the truth and start choosing what you actually believe.

If this lands, subscribe for next week, share it with a friend who feels quietly stuck, and leave a review so more quiet rebels can find us. What’s your “sensible reason” that shows up right when things get real?

  • Ep.104 The Flicker Effect - What if Feeling Alive Again Is Totally Possible?
    2026/07/30

You can tick every box and still feel like something in you is turned down. That quiet, persistent “off” feeling isn’t always a warning siren, sometimes it’s a signal that your life has become too dim to fit who you are now. I’m Zoe, and I’m putting words to the moments you’ve probably been brushing aside: the pang of envy when someone laughs too loudly, the 11pm idea that won’t let you sleep, the strange recognition when a stranger describes a life you’ve never allowed yourself to want.

I introduce you to the Flicker Effect and why it’s the opposite of the Dimmer Effect in last week's episode. The dimmer is the slow, reasonable process of dialling down your aliveness through compromises that add up over years. The flicker is what happens when your current gets through anyway! Instead of treating those flashes as “noise” or “random”, we can treat them as data: clues to desire, purpose, creativity, and the parts of you that still want to live at full brightness. If you’ve felt stuck, uninspired, or quietly resentful, this is a grounded personal growth framework that doesn’t require a dramatic life overhaul.

Then we make it practical. Noticing what lights you up is only step one, so we turn it into a challenge: go flicker hunting, write the moments down before you edit them, and deliberately run more current through whatever they point to. No five-year plan required. Just ten minutes of the smallest version of the thing you want, done on purpose this week, before you lose your nerve.

If you want accountability, call the free House Hotline and share your flicker moments (anonymous if you prefer). Subscribe, share this with a quiet rebel who needs it, and leave a review so more people can find their way back to feeling alive.

  • Ep.103 The Dimmer Effect - How Your Sensible Choices Slowly Turned Down Your Life
    2026/07/23

Enjoyed this episode? Send me a text!

You can tick every box and still feel like your life is happening with the lights turned low. That’s the tension I’m naming today: the moment you realise you are not unhappy enough for a dramatic reset, but you are not alive enough to keep calling it fine. I call it the dimmer effect, the slow, sneaky way we make small, sensible decisions that quietly turn our own dial down until “fine” is the only thing we remember.

I walk through a real example from my career, from moving to Italy and losing my job as a footwear designer to gradually lowering my expectations from “something similar” to “anything”. It is not a story about failure or laziness. It is a story about how ambition gets edited out by practicality, and how the belief that we should be grateful can slowly become a belief that we do not get to want more.

We also explore how the dimmer effect shows up beyond work: in relationships, park creativity in an endless “someday”, and give ourselves away with language like “not bad” and “can’t complain”. I share a simple daily exercise to spot where you chose the fine thing instead of the true thing, plus one question to help you take a small, no-permission-needed action this week.

If you want more honest, practical tools for feeling alive again, subscribe, share this with a friend who feels a bit dimmed, and leave a review so more people can find House of Voltage. What would change tomorrow if you turned your voltage up one notch?
